This two-day conference aims to stimulate discussion and raise the profile and awareness of creativity and new technology in Wales by drawing together professionals from the arts, business, industry, and education.
Organised by b10c, a forum for creativity and technology, in collaboration with the University of Wales, Lampeter.
Outline:
Through a programme of presentations, seminars, workshops and plenary discussions, this two-day seminar will explore the relationship between creativity, technology, and new media activity at the beginning of the 21st century particularly as it affects regional economic development, education and creative practice.
As the novelty value of an emerging e-culture evaporates, and enthusiasm gives way to a healthy suspicion, it becomes increasingly necessary to acknowledge and promote the possibilities offered by new technology whilst maintaining a critical and balanced view of how technologies impact on our lives and our outlook.
What is not in doubt at this crucial moment is that electronic media is recognised as a significantly different conduit for creativity and communications in various professional practices.
Not least that the convergence of traditional platforms creates new opportunities especially when combined with the growing recognition that, in order to be competitive, individuals and businesses need to link up with others through partnership.
One outcome of this will be nothing less than a radical revision of economic and social geography as the focus of commerce and culture becomes dispersed throughout the regions.
This conference will provide a forum for cross discipline exchanges of ideas between business and industry, science and technology, education and creative practices in Wales in order to meet the real challenges that e-culture presents.
The conference`s aims are to make a grounded and practical intervention in these, sometimes abstract, debates. Its objective is to make an important contribution to the growing culture of professionals in the arts and technology in Wales by bringing together creative and commercial interests in new media.
The event will provide real opportunities for collaboration, alliance and partnership between individuals, organisations and business in Wales by drawing together a broad constituency of people united by diverse involvement with digital media and remote working.
The programme will identify the challenges that working regionally presents and discuss whether Wales could harness its remoteness and the virtual properties of new technology as a way of promoting a light industry in a largely rural country.
It will focus on the social and economic aspects of new technology and provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and the emergence of new projects. The stranded themes include
* Digital Economies
* From Broadcast to Broadband
* Sustainable Technology
* Remoteness
* Fine Art and New Media
* Web/Virtual Learning Environments
* Presencing
* Design Futures
Speaker drawn from across the United Kingdom with special interest in business, education and the arts will make presentations intended to stimulate discussion and positive interaction in the plenary sessions and social forum.
In addition, a number of b10c initiatives intended to encourage creative and commercial interaction will be facilitated by ReMote. These include the `b10c network`, a professional online network for the arts and technology in Wales established in response to a number of requests for new media skills in Wales, and `bloc refresh`, an online prospectus of courses, workshops, training, and education in art and new technology in Wales.
b10c Refresh
There is a growing demand for piece-meal or refresher courses and on-line structures for education on the practical, theoretical, and artistic understanding of new media towards life long learning.
New media is generally recognised as a prominent vehicle for creativity and communications by many professionals who therefore need to cultivate their knowledge of new media in order to further their practice.
bloc Refresh aims to provide a searchable online prospectus of adult education, graduate and postgraduate courses, workshops, seminars and events on creativity and new technology in Wales.
We are collating prospectus details on long term and short term courses and workshops rather than detailed course structure including contact name and addresses, telephone number, and email.
This initiative will be discussed at the Roundtable: b10c Refresh – Education in Creativity and Technology at the conference ReMote, Creativity and Technology in Wales, September 22nd and 23rd organised by b10c in conjunction with the University of Wales, Lampeter.
The Roundtable: b10c Refresh aims to discuss new structures for education and learning methods and encourage partnerships between education and business
b10c Network
Creativity and communications in various professional practices can converge to create exciting opportunities in responses to the growing recognition that, in order to be competitive, individuals and businesses need to link up with others through partnership.
The bloc Network bring together a broad constituency of individuals and businesses united by diverse involvement with digital media and remote working. The network provides real opportunities for collaboration, alliance and partnership between Wales-based individuals, organisations and business and cross discipline exchanges between business and industry, science and technology, education and creative practices.
