Call for Artists: Artist in Residence ⁄⁄

Location: england

Exciting Opportunity for a disabled or Deaf artist (UK-based)

A research and artistic development residency supported by three leading art organisations; Prism Arts, Lanternhouse and Folly.

The residency will create the space and time for an artist to develop their practice while supported and promoted by three high profile art organisations.

The chosen artist will be asked to develop commission ideas for the Cultural Olympiad Unlimited programme. Unlimited is a unique opportunity for disabled and Deaf artists to access funding to develop and produce a new piece of work. The ideas developed during the residency can form part of a bid for up to £50,000 to support the production of a new piece of work.

Unlimited encourages disabled and Deaf artists to push beyond their personal best by creating work which opens doors, changes minds, and inspires new collaborations. Unlimited offers winning artists the opportunity to showcase their work at high profile events across the country.

Applications to Unlimited must come through a partner arts organisation; this is why Prism Arts, Lanternhouse and Folly have collaborated to ensure that disabled artists can access the space and time required to take advantage of this commission opportunity.

This residency will enable the successful artist, at no cost to themselves, to develop ideas for a commission bid of up to £50,000, which can be made on their behalf by one of the partner organisations.

All three organisations will support the chosen artist in developing their bid so their project has the best possible chance of being accepted.

This opportunity is open to artists developing work across a range of art-forms, however we particularly welcome artists who work with technologies or consider future ways of life in their work.

In return for support, advice, accommodation and a stipend we would expect the artist to:

• engage/collaborate with the newly formed Cumbrian Disabled Artists Network

• contribute to Lanternhouse`s participative programme during their residency

• present proposals at the end of the residency

The Details

Accommodation for 2-3 weeks at Lanternhouse, Ulverston, and a stipend of £300* is available to the chosen artist. We expect the residency to take place in January 2011.

*The £300 stipend represents a basic payment. However, we will enter into a unique relationship with each artist and as well as a basic fee, we offer accommodation and working space, access to technological support and our digital resources.

Participation is a vital component of the project and the artist in residence is asked to contribute to our engagement programme, for this delivery we will also pay a negotiated fee. We also offer a budget for project/development work – this is negotiated as part of the residency.
