Outline:

Picture This presents the first UK solo showing of ´Diego Garcia”, a new work by artist Aikaterini Gegisian, accompanied by Aikaterini Gegisian in conversation with writer and critic Colin Perry.

´Diego Garcia shows us the dark underbelly of a troubled paradise. It asks us to think about how the idealisation of a place relates to perspective, distance, control and power. It turns answers into questions, and asks us to look at the world in all its brutal rawness.” Colin Perry

´Diego Garcia: is an artist’s documentary, which looks at the deportation of the inhabitants of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean (now the site of one of the biggest American military bases in the world) by the British Government to Mauritius. The film juxtaposes text extracts from the Chagossian`s High Court testimonies ´ which collectively portray the islands as a paradise lost ´ with a camera that continuously wanders in the Mauritian landscape. These testimonies become the starting point for looking at Mauritius and the Indian Ocean as a complex set of relationships and act as catalysts in unravelling the hidden traces of history inscribed in spaces.

In collaboration with Kalfayan Galleries (Athens-Thessaloniki), ´Diego Garcia” has been shown at the Elefsina Cultural Center ‘L. KANELLOPOULOS’, Greece, Guest Projects, London and will be shown at Thessaloniki Center of Contemporary Art, Greece in 2011.

Copies of Aikaterini: Falling In Place (including The Long View, a commissioned essay by Colin Perry), published by Kalfayan Galleries (Athens-Thessaloniki, Greece), will be on sale.

´Diego Garcia” was produced through Picture This’ Small Wonders scheme and funded by the Arts Council England, Thessaloniki Contemporary Art Center and PARTage Residencies, Mauritius.
