Bootcamps – Holiday Workshops ⁄⁄

A series of FREE 2-day workshops for young people aged between 11-19 years held across Ceredigion.

The workshops are aimed at beginners and those with a keen interest in developing their skills in computing beyond the usual screen and keyboard.

If you don’t know anything about technology, that’s fine. We just need your enthusiasm and ideas.

Spring Half-Term
What: The Secret of Ship Design
Who: Led by Dr Paul Miller (
When: 9.30am to 3pm, Monday 11 and Tuesday 12, February 2013
Where: Theatr Mwldan, Bath House Road, Cardigan, SA43 1JY
Students are introduced to the three main aspects of ship design; flotation, stability and resistance, through hands-on experiments with model vessels. The knowledge they learn will be applied in a competition using models they design and build.

What: Raspberry Pi – Networked adventure
Who: Led by Richard Shipman (
When: 9.30am to 3pm, Thursday 14 and Friday 15 February 2013
Where: Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Aberystwyth, SY23 2AX

Outline:  This workshop will introduce you to networking concepts through the development of a game. You don’t need your own raspberry pi or need to know anything about programming.

Easter Holiday
What: App Inventor Robotics – Smartphones meet Lego Mindstorms
Who: Led by robotics expert Dr Fred Labrosse
When: 9.30am to 3pm, Monday 8 and Tuesday 9, April 2013
Where: Theatr Mwldan, Bath House Road, Cardigan, SA43 1JY
During this workshop we will be creating apps for smartphones, then using these apps to control LEGO MINDSTORMS robots. You don’t need to know anything about apps, programming or robotics.

What: Printcraft – Minecraft meeets 3D printing
Who: Led by Jonathan Roscoe and Paul Harter

When: 9.30am to 3pm, Thurs 11 and Fri 12, April 2013
Where: Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Aberystwyth, SY23 2AX
Outline: In this bootcamp we introduce the world of 3D printing, a powerful tool in industrial processes that has now entered the hands of hobbyists. Using the popular video game Minecraft, we’ll collaboratively design and build a model city from scratch.

Technocamps is a partnership project between the Universities of Swansea, Aberystwyth, Bangor, and Glamorgan that inspires young people aged 11-19 to attend workshops on a range of exciting computing-based topics.
