Abandon Normal Devices (AND) Festival

12:00 am in Events by bloc

Date: 1 ´ 7 October 2010
Website: http://www.andfestival.org.uk/
Location: england

Outline:

After its smash-hit inaugural year in Liverpool last Autumn, this year’s Abandon Normal Devices (AND) Festival of New Cinema and Digital Culture is hosted by Manchester from 1 ´ 7 October 2010, where it once again invites a host of international cross-platform artists and filmmakers to investigate the question: what are normal devices? How and why might we abandon them?

Abandon Normal Devices is a 2012 inspired new festival and has already produced award winning work, Apichatpong Weerasethakul won the Palm d`Or this year with a film commissioned by FACT, Haus der Kunst and Animate Projects and produced by Abandon Normal Devices.

In Manchester the emphasis is on explorations of identity, behaviour and systems, that define who and what we are, the 2010 edition of Abandon Normal Devices features brand new commissions from internationally renowned artists, filmmakers and cultural provocateurs, highlights of which include a special collaboration and exhibition with artist Phil Collins; the UK premiere of Gillian Wearing’s first feature length film Self Made; human vacuum packing from controversial artist Lawrence Malstaff in the form of his live performance, Shrink; and UnSpooling: Artists & Cinema, a gallery based exhibition of work from artists and filmmakers which explores the materiality of film and the history of cinema.

Further programme confirmations, venues and special events will be announced in the coming weeks at www.andfestival.org.uk

EMPAC New Media Residency

12:00 am in Residency by bloc

Website: http://www.empac.rpi.edu/
Location: international

Outline:

The Experimental Media and Performing Arts Centre (EMPAC) is dedicated to advancing research and artistic production at the intersection of technology, media and the time-based arts (media arts, video, music, dance, theatre, etc.). and run an ongoing residency programme for artists, scholars and researchers.

As EMPAC is part of a technological research university and carries the word `experimental` in its name, goals may turn out to be unobtainable or dead ends, be they artistic or technical. Residencies may be used to take risks and experiment with new ideas, which are not necessarily attached to specific performances or a finished work.

Along with a state-of-the art facility, EMPAC offers residents the logistical support of experts in audio, video and stage technologies, as well as critical discourse with an interdisciplinary curatorial team.

If you live in Europe and want to turn your home into the house of the future then this is your chance! What could you build? That’s the exciting part. You could track your cat, your plants, see if your kids or flatmates are home, measure how often the fridge door opens, and lots more. Your local technology expert will work with you to figure out what to do and how to make it. In exchange for a bundle of free techy toys and training, you’ll get to blog about them, publish videos and share your experience with the world.

Cerbyd Itinerary

12:00 am in Events by bloc

Date: 2-10 Aug 2010
Website: http://www.cerbyd.org/
Location: wales

Outline:

Cerbyd (`vehicle` in Welsh) is neither touring exhibition (although it may involve artworks touring Wales) nor training course (despite incorporating numerous specialist workshops) nor residency (even in view of its central aim of bringing a particular number of artists together in the same spot for a particular length of time). Indeed, Cerbyd appears as something altogether new in the busy world of group projects, refreshingly focused on process rather than result. You might even call it a social experiment: starting on the 2nd of August, ten artists from across Wales will embark on an eight-day bus journey traversing the length and breadth of the country, from Cardiff to Caernarfon and back again.

At each stop the group will encounter a fellow group of specialists, from the Cardiff Humanists to the Aberystwyth quizzers to Brecknock & Radnor Bee Keepers. There will also be ad-hoc stop-offs to see exhibitions, visit local studios and to otherwise stretch aching limbs, but the meetings with `people with passions`, as co-organiser Brian Watkins puts it, are what makes Cerbyd truly unique – the audience for this project, Watkins remarks, is the string of communities that the travellers will visit and in doing so join together, and any notion of an exhibition that might result from the eight days is purely secondary.

At its core, this project is about linking together people who would not otherwise have crossed each others` path, an ethos which will surely bear fruit for the Welsh art community.
