LIFE LESS ORDINARY: Performance and Display in South African Art

Ffotogallery, the national development agency for photography and lens-based media in Wales, is pleased to present Life Less Ordinary; a major exhibition held at two sites, featuring timely work by a selection of the most exciting artists working and living in South Africa today. Life Less Ordinary brings together photography, performance, video and installation work by a young generation of South African artists wishing to break away from epic narratives of race and instead play with, celebrate, stage and transcend more complex notions of difference and identity.

This event, one of a series to be held on the subject of archive media management in Cardiff, will cover the theory and legal definitions of copyright and rights owners’ representation bodies i.e.

• what is copyright? how long does it last?

• what works are covered by copyright?

• what are orphan works?

• what is fair dealing?

• what is a collecting society?

• who are represented by collecting societies?

It will also cover practical examples with case studies of rights clearances from a production archive researcher’s experience.

Community Arts Training

Outline:

Are you a professional artist working in the performing or visual arts? Would you like experience and training in working with young people?

From April this year until 2011 the Arts Centre in Aberystwyth will be offering structured training workshops for artists including the following:
– Seminars with specialists on child protection, the needs of young people at risk, how to progress your career as a community artist.
– Practical workshops with artform specialists like Protein Dance and Cardboard Citizens in areas such as forum theatre, dance with young people, gallery education; printing and photography; digital creativity ´ these workshops will provide essential skills for using your artform with specific groups.

There will also be an opportunity for a number of artists to take part in a practical mentoring programme working with young people themselves alongside experienced community arts practitioners.
The programme of seminars and workshops are open to all free of charge.

The first sessions will be in June.

Lines of Desire: Call

Who: Artists who work in any media, including new media (moving image, sound, interactive, internet, new technologies), live-art, performance, cross-art form / interdisciplinary, installation and collaborative practices – at whatever stage in their career.

What: A major group exhibition titled ‘Lines of Desire’, selected and organised by Oriel Davies Young Curators, a dedicated group of 15-24 year olds who are inspired by presenting contemporary art to new audiences.

‘Lines of Desire’ aims to bring together artists whose work explores this broad concept, which might include: Pathways, Journeys, Maps and Contours, Routes, Directions, Borders Boundaries, Queues, Timelines and Deadlines, Tracks and Tracking, Longitudes and Latitudes, Positions, Coordinates and Axes, Outlines, Orbits and Ellipses, Musical scores and Rhythms, Poetry and Song-lines,Thought-lines, Fault-lines, Narratives and Storylines.

International Opportunities Fund

Wales Arts International is pleased to announce the release of the new International Opportunities Fund guidelines – an open application fund for international activity. From 1st April 2010, individual artists and members of arts organisations based in Wales will be able to apply to Wales Arts International for up to £3000 to undertake international travel for a broader range of activities including:

– Presenting work at significant international venues, events and showcases.
– Artists working in any artform delivering collaborative projects with practitioners, producers or presenters outside the UK.
– Research and development with partners overseas with a view to future collaboration.
– International residency projects aimed at the development of the artist’s practice.
