Hacio`r Iaith

12:00 am in Events by bloc

Date: 30 Jan 2010
Website: http://haciaith.com/
Location: wales

Outline:

Hacio’r Iaith is a new and exciting event where we will explore how technology applies to, around and through Cymraeg (the Welsh language). Subjects covered are expected to include localisation, internationalisation, machine translation, APIs, mash-ups, education, mobile, blogging and other social media in Cymraeg.

The event will be part BarCamp and part Hack Day (both are well established templates for events worldwide). That means lots of idea sharing, demonstrations and practical sessions, all through the medium of Cymraeg. Our programme is user-generated, meaning that we encourage real participation and welcome anyone who wants to run a session related to technology and Cymraeg. A session can have two people or more ´ if it’s useful, go for it! There will be stuff for beginners, hardcore geeks and everyone in between.

Contributions are welcome in English or Cymraeg, but the focus of the event is use of web technology by Cymraeg speakers, through the language of Cymraeg and also for Cymraeg learners. Simultaneous translation into English will be provided through headsets, for those who request it in advance.

Website: http://squeezema.wordpress.com
Location: wales

Outline:

Squeeze is an exciting new collaboration between MA Art Practice and MA Moving Image, two distinct postgraduate courses at the University of Glamorgan. The purpose of the exhibition is to provide a live opportunity for students to develop their individual practice through intellectual engagement with the discourses of current critical theory, the professional practice of showing and promoting work and to test out experimental research across a variety of chosen disciplines. The venue TactileBOSCH is an artist led cooperative and is renowned for its large-scale cutting edge exhibitions that combine performance, digital media and installation. While the artists didn’t envisage working thematically, a degree of convergence has emerged to do with the perceived elasticity of time, space, memory and identity and a shared awareness of the relative nature of truth.

Artists: Abbey Abbass; Wendy Batey; Sam Cross; Natalia Costa; Sali Edmunds; Nathan Laughlin; Anna Liang; Emmanuel Okelo; Heather Parnell; Laura Sealey; Obeid Sentamu; Graham Talbot; Jonathan Thomas; Vicky Ward; Graham Wilkins

Artes Mundi 4

12:00 am in Exhibition by bloc

Date: 11 Mar – 6 Jun 2010
Website: www.artesmundi.org
Location: wales

Outline:

The work of the eight international contemporary artists shortlisted for the fourth Artes Mundi Prize will be on display at National Museum Cardiff from 11 March to 6 June 2010. The winner of the £40,000 Prize will be announced on 19 May 2010.

The artists selected for Artes Mundi 4 are Yael Bartana (Israel), Fernando Bryce (Peru), Ergin €avuşoğlu (Bulgaria), Chen Chieh-jen (Taiwan), Olga Chernysheva (Russia), Gulnara Kasmalieva and Muratbek Djumaliev (Kyrgyzstan) and Adrian Paci (Albania).

The Prize brings together outstanding artists from around the world who stimulate thinking about the human condition and humanity. Its aim is to give a platform to contemporary artists who are established in their own countries but have previously received little critical recognition in the UK. Many are known on the international art scene, some through exhibiting at biennales and other significant art events. This year, the artists explore issues of national identity, globalisation, consumerism, propaganda and migration. Using the media of painting, photography, film, video, sound, installation and drawing, they present the impact of economic and political changes on their immediate rural or urban environments and on wider communities – local, regional and global.
